Tips on Selecting a Qualified Web Developer

Check out the web developer's portfolio or client list.
You will want to make sure that the web developer you choose is able to create unique designs that are professional and tailored to your industry. You also want to make sure that the sites that were created have the functionality that you are looking for. Choosing the wrong developer will waste your time and money. You may decide to go with a cheaper web development company but make sure that they are able to deliver.

We have "saved" many of our clients from these types of disasters. Some of our clients went with a developer just based on cost alone. The developer had little knowledge or experience in designing and maintaining web sites. Our clients ended up turning to us to fix the problems and in turn ended up wasting their time and spending more money.

Check references
Any web development company that is nervous on giving you a name and phone number is probably not the most reliable. A few short quotes on their web site just won't cut it. Ask the developer for their client's information and call as many as possible. Also, check out their success stories.

Here are more tips to keep in mind when looking for a web developer:

  • Make sure they take the time to understand your business.
  • If you're looking for a unique design, try to understand their design process. Do they research other web sites in your industry? Do they evaluate your competitors web sites? Do they utilize the latest design techniques?
  • Ensure their production is under one roof. This helps the production of the site to be seemless and also makes for quicker delivery times.
  • When you get your proposals, make sure you read them carefully. Remember, not all web applications are created equal.
  • Find out what development platforms they're using. For the most secure applications, make sure their using the .NET framework and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Make sure they understand web security.
  • Evaluate their delivery times.
  • How does the company handle changes and updates to your web application? Do they have maintenance programs?
  • Find out if training is included with your application or will it be an extra cost?
  • Find out if they offer their own hosting and control their own servers.
  • How responsive are they? Can you call in or are you required to email? Can you reach a live person and if not, are their calls returned quickly?
  • Understand their support policies.
  • Most importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable with.
